Nearly every significant project I work on requires a custom set of icons. It’s always been a little hard to give site editors a nice, straightforward way to add the brand-correct icon to a page or a button. I’ve created a tidy little plugin to make it a little easier to manage. Project Icons is a developer-focused plugin that allows you to drop SVG icon files into a directory and (after a quick build step) have them available in the Icon Block and the Button block.

In my projects, I’ll be sure to rename this plugin with the client name so you’ll see “Acme Inc. Icons” instead of the generic “Project Icons” label. But I’m most excited about how this should be a reasonable ongoing workflow. In a typical project, there’s a clear set of icons that need to be included as part of the initial design. But over the lifecycle more need to be added. This makes it super easy; just drop the new icons into the folder and run the little build step.
